The Feminine | Mind, Body & Spirit

Alabama A&M University | Morrison Gallery | March 7 - April 4, 2025

The Feminine - Body, Mind, and Spirit is the 2nd iteration in an annual exhibition series, titled The Feminine, presented by the Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art (ALWCA) that explores the multifaceted experiences of women as they navigate the complexities of their inner and outer worlds. Through this exhibition series, the ALWCA seeks to delve into how personal artistic practices can illuminate the diverse, transformative, and often challenging journey of womanhood.

Each year of this series, the ALWCA strives to work with a new curator/juror. In 2025, I was that person. I moved to Huntsville in December 2023 and became a member of the ALWCA shortly after.

The works presented in this exhibition are a reflection of some of the diverse and powerful narratives that women carry. The 30 ALWCA artists featured here were invited to share their unique perspectives on concepts such as personal and collective transformation, empowerment and agency, feminism and gender equality, identity and intersectionality, the unfeminine - subverting gender norms, nature and environmentalism, and motherhood and family.

Together, these works form a powerful narrative that challenges, celebrates, and redefines what it means to be feminine. Their works speak to the richness of identity, exploring intersectionality and the complexities of belonging, while also challenging the limitations imposed by societal norms. Central to this exhibition are explorations of the body—its power, vulnerability, and connection to mental health, as well as the nurturing and often transformative aspects of motherhood and family. The artists also offer interpretations of our relationship with the earth, and how it is inextricably tied to our identities as women. Ultimately, these artists invite us to reflect on how we understand and embrace the feminine experience, individually and collectively, in our world today.
